Reach Out To Enhance Your Valentine's Day
Pompton Plains, NJ, February 5, 2007 -- St. Valentine's Day is traditionally celebrated as a day to send and receive chocolate, flowers and love notes, but can be a difficult time for those who are feeling lonely or experiencing loss. Whether your loved one is away, you are recently separated or divorced, or still searching for that someone special, getting through the sentiment of February can prove itself a challenge.
"February is a tough month, particularly for many in the North who miss the sun and its psychological benefits," said Michelle Borden, MSW, LCSW, Associate Executive Director, NewBridge Services, Inc. "Valentine's Day can intensify sad feelings for those who will not celebrate with a loved one."
For those feeling blue at the sight of pink hearts and red roses, Borden suggests that one way to feel better is to reach out to another person who might be having a difficult time this Valentine Day or is feeling lonely or distant from family and friends.
"Soldiers, residents of nursing homes, neighbors living alone, or patients in hospitals are all people who would enjoy a card," said Borden. "They don't need to know you; they just need to know someone out there cares about them. And in doing something kind for another person, you will likely feel better inside."
