Tips for a Stress-Free Return to School

Pompton Plains, NJ - August 21, 2006 - As lazy summer days turn into the whirlwind of autumn, people often find it difficult to readjust to the hectic pace of life, school and extracurricular activities.

To help families cope during this busy time, NewBridge, a nonprofit provider of behavioral health and education programs and services, offers the following 20 tips for a smooth transition to school life.

  1. Visit your child's classrooms and locker before school starts.
  2. Get children involved in purchasing and organizing school supplies.
  3. Limit afterschool activities for the first few weeks of school.
  4. Eat together as a family.
  5. Create a family planner-one place where all activities are listed (for mom & dad too!)
  6. As a parent, create your own fall rituals of activities, traditions and exercise.
  7. Delegate as much as possible-let children set out their own clothes, pack lunches, etc.
  8. Ask pointed questions that require detailed answers ("What was the best part of your day?" rather than "How was school?")
  9. Review school rules, safety rules, and expectations at home.
  10. Prepare tomorrow's clothes the night before.
  11. Keep breakfast hearty and healthy-avoid sugars and white processed foods.
  12. Set up an in basket and an out basket for homework.
  13. Allow children time for physical activity.
  14. If you cannot greet your children when they get home, call them.
  15. Get to bed early and practice the school year morning routine for a week before school begins.
  16. Set aside a clean, quiet place for study/homework time.
  17. Reach out to the teacher early with questions and issues.
  18. Listen, and let children know you're available to talk.
  19. Check backpacks daily, and return forms and notes promptly.
  20. Find humor-after all, for the next nine months, this is your schedule!
