Benefit to entire community envisioned

To the Editor:

It was very gratifying to see the Daily Record's excellent coverage of the housing rally in Trenton last week. NewBridge has been working in the field of providing services to people with special needs for more than 40 years. Morris County has made tremendous progress in overcoming discrimination against people with disabilities.

As a participant in the Housing Alliance of Morris County, NewBridge is intent on working with other organizations to create an atmosphere of acceptance enabling an increase in the supply of affordable housing for all people.

We are optimistic about the governor's new Special Needs Housing Fund to build 10,000 units of housing for people with special needs, but continue to be concerned about the larger need for affordable housing for all. NewBridge believes the trust fund will succeed in leveraging other housing funds and opportunities creating "mixed use" housing which will benefit the entire community.

Against this hopeful backdrop was the news of the hostile response of residents in Randolph to a Habitat for Humanity project. I am reminded of the challenge ahead of all of us, as we soften our hearts and promote housing for people we know, people we care about and the people we need. . .namely our family, friends, and community workers.
