NewBridge honored for housing initiative

NewBridge Services, Inc. is a nonprofit provider of behavioral health and education programs and services. Since 1963, the organization has worked to assist high school dropouts earn their diplomas, find homes for the homeless and recently, NewBridge counseled and assisted victims of Hurricane Katrina.

The nonprofit organization is also looking to create 100 new units of affordable housing in Morris County. For his work in that effort, Robert L. Parker, executive director of NewBridge, was honored as the Business Development Person of the Year in the nonprofit sector by the Morris County Chamber of Commerce.

During his time at NewBridge, Parker has developed a staff that has worked with Katrina victims, people who suffer from mental illness and people with limited living options. When he learned of a state trust fund that would donate 80 cents for every 20 cents NewBridge raised toward housing, Parker developed partnerships with the United Way, Supportive Housing Association of New Jersey, and others. Those relationships have helped raise hundreds of thousands of dollars, which allowed NewBridge to hire a full-time housing development director.
