September is Healthy Aging Month, a time to focus on the daily choices that help us feel stronger, more connected, and more at ease as we grow older. At NewBridge Services, we see how small steps — moving more, getting enough rest, and staying socially engaged — can make a meaningful difference in the physical and mental health of older adults across northern New Jersey
Why Healthy Aging Matters
There are now more than 61 million Americans aged 65 and older, a figure expected to grow to 82 million by 2050. Nearly three in ten older adults live alone, with the rate notably higher among women and older age groups.
Healthy aging isn’t only about physical health - it’s also about purpose and staying engaged. A UC Davis study published in 2025 found that adults with a strong sense of purpose were 28% less likely to develop dementia or mild cognitive impairment. Researchers noted that purpose could come from relationships, volunteering, hobbies, or spirituality - everyday activities that give life meaning and help sustain cognitive health. Growing evidence shows that both purpose and a positive outlook can strengthen resilience as we age.
Everyday Habits That Support Aging Well
Healthy aging grows from small, steady choices. A few that matter most:
- Move your body — A daily walk, light stretching, or NewBridge’s Bodies in Motion class can boost balance, strength, and mood.
- Prioritize rest — Getting seven to nine hours of sleep helps memory, mood, and overall wellness.
- Be mindful with medications and alcohol — Follow prescriptions carefully, watch for side effects, and limit alcohol to protect balance and memory.
- Keep up with routine checkups — Regular medical visits and screenings, including vision and hearing checks, can catch concerns early and support long-term health.
- Stay connected — Call a friend, join a class, or volunteer. Strong relationships and a sense of purpose protect mental health, easing loneliness, depression, and anxiety.

For seniors who are homebound, NewBridge@Home provides them and caregivers free in-home counseling. NewBridge also offers individual therapy, in person or by telehealth, to help seniors cope with life transitions, depression, anxiety, or other challenges.
